The Gold of Frankincense & Myrrh

I

When we think about Frankincense and Myrrh, many of us think about the story of the three Kings who brought gifts to Baby Jesus.

In fact, you may even already be singing “We three Kings of Orient are” by now!

But, what are these two mysterious materials, and where did they come from, and more to the point, why have they ended up in my beautiful “In the Deep Midwinter” Spa Ritual?

Frankincense and myrrh are both tree resins from their respective trees. And in addition to being treasured gifts for a newborn king, they also have powerful healing properties that have been used for centuries.

Frankincense resin comes from the trunk of the Boswellia tree and Myrrh resin can be found in small, thorny trees from the Commiphora family – both of these trees are indigenous to the Arabian peninsula.

Frankincense and myrrh essential oils are extracts from these corresponding tree resins. These oils are extracted through steam distillation or solvent extraction processes. The resulting oils have a strong scent that can are used for aromatherapy or for making perfumes or incense - Frankincense being sweet, warm and woody and Myrrh, a distinctly earthy scent, with a slight licorice note.

Frankincense and myrrh have been used together for centuries in incense and religious ceremonies and have been found in many ancient tombs.

These beautiful oils have been prized throughout history for their spiritual significance, as well as their versatile healing properties and in recent years, these two essential oils have become more widely known and appreciated by modern society.

For me, and for you, in my little box of potions and spells, they are equally loved.

They are used in my aromatherapy to help reduce stress, improve sleep, and enhance mood, and hardly a day goes by when one, or the other, and sometimes both, are used in a blend for massage or diffusing.

There is nothing I love better than coming up with a lovely blend for a treatment.

For my “In the Deep Midwinter” Spa Ritual I wanted to blend frankincense and myrrh with some other beautiful oils to create a truly unique and powerful aroma for this beautiful treatment.

And I am absolutely delighted with this one!

Something that will help you escape the madness of the season and rekindle peace and goodwill, within the warmth of my therapy room.

Earthy oils like patchouli and sandalwood work beautifully with frankincense and myrrh. Patchouli oil is said to bring about feelings of tranquility, while sandalwood has a sweet and calming scent.

When blended together, these oils will create a truly profound and calming experience for your massage.

Wrap that up with a Get a Glow mini facial, a facial massage using Eastern methods, and a luxurious lower leg and foot massage with Rituals “Ritual of Oudh” body crème as a final Arabian influence, to conclude this beautiful experience, and you will leave feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and walking in the air!

Your mind, body and soul will thank you.

Much love, Fiona x
